The palatines, sometimes known as the Twelve Peers, were the foremost warriors of Charlemagne’s court, according to the literary cycle known as the Matter of France In their earliest appearances the paladins were not the companions of Charlemagne, but of his vassal Roland. This Roland is based on the historical figure Hroudland mentioned by Charlemagne's biographer Einhard as a Lord of the Breton March who died in the Battle of Rosceveaux Pass in 778.
